Put down the fork....

Yeah....that's how I've been feeling this week.

I was doing well in the food department and then Sunday night happened.  I stayed at the farm in preparation for an early morning workshop I was teaching in Newark- would save me 40 minutes of sleep in the morning. Well worth it!

But let me back up a few steps....Jen Huang came to visit!!!!

Jen with Piney
It was absolutely awesome having her here visiting from NYC!  She stayed with us Friday night after coming in on the megabus to the White Marsh park and go- how convenient!!  It's nice having a guest room with a bed so we can have guests here comfortably.  We spent all day Saturday together which was fantastic, of course.  We had a nice lazy omelet breakfast before heading out to visit the farm.  My mom was so thrilled to have her so we hung out there for a good couple hours while I worked with Indy on the lunge line and we all played with the horses in the backyard.  He's still learning this whole going in circles around me thing so I've been walking with him while mom holds the line in the middle.

Bella wanted to help.....which at times made me want to throttle her because it was mega distracting for Indy.  But, it is also good for him to have lots of distractions to practice in that setting.

My handsome man :)

After some great times at the farm, we headed to Fair Hill for a nice hike.  Big thanks to Jen for sending me all these awesome pictures!! :D  We had a nice little hike around the covered bridge orange trail then headed back home for a quick fresh up before dinner downtown with Yao- her cousin.  I hadn't seen her since high school so it was great to catch up with her and we had a tasty dinner with a harbor view.

Where did all the leaves go?

On the trail

On Sunday, Mom and I went on an absolutely beautiful trail ride at Fair Hill.  I was on Dancer, while she rode Piney.  Of course I got some serious running on and we had a blast.  Seeing a theme for the weekend?  We even got to see Kate and Imad that night and hear all about their trip to Morocco- some great pictures!

So...why the food problem?  Once Kate and Imad left I had a small amount of ice cream- which I had planned into my day knowing that mint chocolate chip would be calling my name.  And then......I went bonkers.  I had a little snickers pumpkin, then another one, then a fun sized bag of M&Ms.  Then a handful of pretzels with a spoonful of peanut butter and some croutons....

Yeah.  I had a full-on binge.  I actually felt totally out of control for the first time in ages.  And the weird thing is...I really don't know what brought it on.  I had a great weekend and felt good.  The ice cream before was delicious and I felt satisfied.  Although, this type of binge only happens in one place- the farm.  Having access to all these foods I never have in the house and in an environment where I know it's "naughty" makes me want to do it that much more.  Crazy Colleen.

Monday I regained control and tried to get some extra activity in after a day full of driving- by walking around the Tyson's Corner mall shopping. lol.  But gosh, this is frustrating and very humbling.  The reality is I have an overeating disorder and I will always struggle with that addiction to binging.  Now I need to forgive myself and move on.

Have you ever had an "out of body" eating attack?  What did you do to stop it?

Indy Heir

My NSV that I shared this week at weight watchers won't surprise many of you- it was that I can enjoy horseback riding again when 3 years ago there wasn't a shot in the world that I could.

This was brought on because..... I HAVE A NEW HORSE!!!

Getting ready to go home
His name is Indy Heir.  He is a 4 year old (born January 12, 2008), 16.1 hh+ (not sure exactly on height, they are thinking 16.1-16.2 hh) Thoroughbred.  He is directly off the racetrack- that's where we picked him up!  I even rode him while he was still at the track on Saturday afternoon. That was an accilerating experience for sure!  I really didn't want to bring him home unless I could ride him first, and we were told by Karen that it wouldn't be possibile due to insurance issues.  My mom's friend, Karen, who she knows from cancer treatment, is an exercise rider for his stable at Delaware Park and has ridden him many times.  When the trainer started talking about sending him to the auction since we was not doing anything, she convinced him to give him to us.  Yeah, you read that correct- give.  As in, we didn't have to pay anything up front (we all know there is no such thing as a free animal).   This all because she really liked Indy and thought he would make a great riding horse and had way too nice a temperment to be sent to the New Holland auction.  At the auction you really have no idea who he is going to end up with and how he will be treated, and she wanted to ensure he had a good home.  awwww lucky for Indy he made a good friend!

So, after a while of playing around with him in the stall and marveling at his beauty- I just grabbed the bull by the horns and asked the trainer, Randy, if I could ride him.   He agreed as long as after Karen got on him she thought he would be safe with me.  After two quick trips around the stall area she hopped off and I mounted.  For a horse that has never been mounted in any way other than a jockey or exercise rider being given a leg up as he stood or sometimes walked forward.....he stood like a pro as I mounted him from a bucket.  Impressive for us both because he is TALL!

Let me just mention a few very different things about this ride- I was riding in an exercise saddle which is this tiny little excuse for a saddle for tiny exercise riders and jockies.  And...it surprisingly wasn't that bad, and I didn't look bad in it! lol.  Made me feel pretty bad ass that I was able to ride him actually.  He wanted to run around this space we were in, but I was able to bring him down and control him which made me feel pretty powerful.  In the end, the trainer was amazed and I was relieved I didn't fall off or make a fool of myself. lol.  He said I had some serious guts to A- get on him and without any hesitation and B- then I rode him well.

Me on Indy, geared up exercise rider style.

Can I just point out the absolutely incredible pedigree he has?!  He was crafted to be a triple crown winner.  His dam (mom) was purchased while in foal with him for 3 million!  He was purchased for $210,000 as a yearling.

And then he raced......and his grand total of winnings is 1 win of 8 races and $9,040 earned.  Wa wa wa wa.... In comparison, his sire (dad) A.P. Indy earned nearly 3 million!! and won such famous races as the Belmont Stakes (3rd leg of the triple crown) and the Breeders Cup Classic. Holy incredible!  So, lucky for us- he was a dud!

He was a bit of a challenge to load because he's never used a step up trailer before but we eventually got him on and home and he met Dancer and Piney.  It was the funniest thing when he first got off the trailer and onto the lush grash of our front yard- he acted as if he hadn't been fed in days he ate the grass so ravenously.  So funny!  After letting him run around the field a bit, we introduced him to Dancer and Piney. They became fast friends, thank goodness! :)

Indy safe at home and ready to be free!

15 minutes after meeting, all is calm and happy
 Welcome Home, Indy Heir!!

Post from last week

So I really thought I had published this last week but apparently I suck....written originally last Monday.

This weekend was fun and Saturday was active and busy- just the way I like it.  I woke up raring to go riding at 9am to find out that Brianne and my mom had gone out and we were going to go later.  I was thrilled that my sister was riding so took advantage of the extra time by hitting up the elliptical at the gym for 45 minutes.  It felt good and reminded me why I liked working out when I first woke up- such a great way to start the day.

We purposefully brought the horses to an event at Fair Hill so Dancer and I could get some practice with dealing with crowds of people and horses- particularly the need to stand still for long periods of times.  I really want to ride him at Fair Hill International this year (for outriding- aka crowd control) like I did Piney last year.  I think he would be awesome....duhh.  Plus it would be fun to ride him at such a big event!  Mom and I talked a lot about a goal that she has set for me- taking jumping lessons with Dancer.  Funny thing about my mom- she shared the goal with her dog Candy's vet (a coworker of mine) before she told me.  lol

Before you get crazy ideas, I have no grand ideas of doing this:

Impressive!
I just want to be able to play around and jump sometimes and not A- hurt my horse, B-fall off,  C- look like an idiot.  O yeah, and breaking my kneck wouldn't be good either.  And it might be fun to do a little competing and get back in the eventing scene.....not gonna lie....but that's not my goal.  yet.

Saturday night I got to enjoy a little girl's night in with the bff which is always fun because Adrian had other plans.  Mom wanted me to join her for church in Wilmington and it's just too far for her to drive by herself.  So, I crashed at the farm and joined my mom for a nice service on Sunday.  On the way home we stopped at one of my favorite stores- a tack store.  Dover Saddlery to be exact.  And I got hooked up with some new Ariat Concord Half Chaps.  They are beautiful, leather masterpieces and I LOVE them.  I love that they look like tall boots and especially LOVE that I can fit into Ariat chaps!!!  My calves have always been huge and I have never in my life been even close to fitting into their chaps in any shape or form- so just that is an accomplishment in itself! :)

If only my calf was this skinny....

Add on 9/25:

To continue with the horsie trend, I rode on Saturday with mom again.  I've ridden with her every weekened for almost 2 months and it has been fantastic.  Such a great stress relief and there is something about riding that works like a continuous foam roller on my glutes.  So it's therapeutic for the mind and body!

Mom had a double chemo treatment on Thursday and she was very nauteous and seemed tired before we left but she really wanted to go anyway.  We had a nice 2.5 hour ride which pushed her to her exhaustion limit.  I really wish I could make the cancer go away or even know what to say when she is sick or upset or mad about her illness and treatments.  But the reality is....there is no good thing to say other than "I love you" and "I'm sorry" so that's all I really say.  After the grimness and utter terror of her initial diagnosis I am grateful for every moment I get to spend with her- especially on horseback which is when she really can forget all about the dreaded C word and enjoy her favorite thing.

So of course I ran Dancer a LOT.  Since I can't get my run on by myself (without physical therapy supervision which means 10 minutes a week), I've been thoroughly enjoying flying across the fields, through the woods, and back again on the gorgeous and magnificent animal that is Dancer!  He's such a blast and I feel that the more we ride together the more we really get a good feel for each other and it feels that much more natural and connected. <3

I love my baby!

Soul Soaring Ride

As I struggle with this hamstring/hip injury, I am trying to keep myself from going crazy with some other things I enjoy- namely horseback riding.  I've loved horses since I can remember and have been seriously riding since I was 10 years old.

Dancer and I on the trail at Fair Hill

I took Friday and Saturday as rest days after some pretty bad hip pain Thursday night after my elliptical and upper body/abs strength training workout.  I wanted to try to ensure I could enjoy a nice ride with my mom on Sunday.  Especially since it was going to be replacing my original plan for September 9th....the Harrisburg Half Marathon. waaa waaaa.

Ok, I know I've been really down about not being able to do this race but....it sucks to work really hard for a goal and not be able to complete it because your legs just can't cut it. grrrr.

Moving on....my ride was AMAZING.  It was exactly what I needed to take my mind off the fact that all my running friends were racing.  PS- they all rocked it out, so proud!  Way to go Ashley, Emily and Mary! :D

Dancer and I taking in the scenery before we tore across the field
It's days like Sunday that I feel so blessed to have my mom with us to share the joy of horseback riding with.  It wasn't long ago that we were worried she wouldn't make it home from the hospital.   Now it's been more than 3 years and although it's a constant battle- she's fighting and I'm so grateful.

My mom with her ever vibrant smiley on Piney
Mom always encourages me to get my run on whenever we are riding because she knows that's what I really love.   It makes my soul soar, plain and simple. There is something about feeling the power of a 1000lb animal beneath you and knowing that you are in control that is invigorating and slightly intoxicating.  And then there is the added adrenaline because at the same time you know it's kinda dangerous and unpredictable as well.  For an adrenaline junky like me, it's the perfect combination!

I had no idea my mom was taking pictures- and she captured this moment trotting along the woods.
Lucky for me, my mom was in a "let's take pictures" mood last weekend (these pictures are all from labor day weekend).  She said it was because I looked too nice in my new (so small I can't believe my eyes at the tag!) breeches and pretty top to not capture forever. Awwww moms know just what to say! :)

Isn't he so handsome?!   Love Dancer to pieces! :)

What is your favorite outdoor activity?  Although I talk a lot about loving to run- I will always love horseback riding more, sorry!  Horses are my first and strongest passion and I would work with horses as my job every day if I could make a decent living that way.   So what do you like to do outside?

Back in the equine world

After piling on the pounds throughout college and grad school there was bound to be some things I couldn't do anymore or couldn't do as well- and the list is long. But the most painful thing I lost when tipping the scales was horseback riding. This simple fact was ongoing fuel to my depression- which of course just made me turn to food more. Viscous cycle, huh?

I've loved horses since I can remember. I started with summer horse camps when I was 6 until I was old enough to start mucking stalls to help pay for my lessons. Lessons turned into teaching summer camp and leasing a horse which led to getting into more serious training and attending seminars and reading every piece of equine literature I could get my hands on. When I was a teenager I was in 4-H and Pony Club like all good equestrian kids.

Even then, I didn't quite fit in. I was always taller and heavier than the other pony clubbers. I had plenty of friends in pony club and could ride just as well if not better than them- but I was always aware that I was bigger. Tack stores reminded me of this because I always had to look for the biggest size- and even then, sometimes it didn't fit. At that age I wasn't obese- but fat people just don't ride horses, and they especially don't show their horses in competition. Why would they want to embarrass themselves?!

But now...things are different. It's weird that I probably weigh more than I did even at the height of my competition days- but I'm so much more fit, and I fit into smaller sizes. This past week I went shopping for a new riding coat and shirt. As if I was going back in time, I pulled the largest size shirt to try on- and was shocked by how HUGE it was on me- I had to go down 2 sizes! And the same thing with the jacket and breeches! I was in NORMAL equestrian sizes and even though I would never consider myself skinny- I felt normal. That is a fantastic feeling when you are fat. If you have never tried on equestrian clothes- imagine pants that are skin tight and fitted shirts with equally fitted jackets. That can make the skinniest person self conscious, but a fat girl? It sucks!

The reason I had to go shopping for new English dress wear was because I was an outrider at Fair Hill International this weekend. I rode for nearly 8 hours on Saturday and managed the crowds around cross country jumps with other outriders so competitors could compete unimpeded by spectators. This is considered an honor and difficult to get on "the list" of riders that are entrusted to keep the competitors safe. To me- this was a DREAM come true, a HUGE check off my bucket list and part of one of the best weekends of my life. I rode Piney, our grey mule and received lots of attention because of how tall and unusually handsome he is. The whole day I sat tall on Piney, confident with my new clothes and immaculately cleaned horse and soaked in every exquisite moment of a beautiful fall day.

One of the best moments of the day was when my sister and her boyfriend came over to visit. After she greeted me and Piney she admitted that she actually had not recognized me and Piney and almost walked by us. She knew about where I was stationed and saw the big grey horse- but he was so clean and I looked so thin she didn't recognize either of us until she got closer. "I haven't seen you in something so fitted and you looked so thin, I didn't think it was you. Please don't be offended," is about what Brianne said. I nearly cried- what a great compliment, and it made my day that much better.

My weekend was made perfect today because I finally mustered up the courage to approach Phillip Dutton to talk to him and get a picture with him. For years I have seen him at Fair Hill International, taken his picture from afar, and even wished him good luck or congratulations while volunteering at the stadium ring. When I was growing up I had multiple posters of him in my room- all signed by him, often thanks to my mom. For years, I made excuses for why he wouldn't want to talk to me- and it almost always had to do with the fact that I didn't look like the "typical" horse person. But for the first time in my life- I didn't feel embarrassed to approach him and talk about horses. I chatted with him about how inspiring he has always been to me, and how much I have always admired him as a horseman. I even made his daughter smile when I told her that I remember when she was born. He was competing at Fair Hill and they announced it after he placed 2nd that year- which was 10 years ago. Below is a picture of me with Phillip and his daughter. Such a special moment in my life that I will never forget, I'm glad I thought enough to get a picture taken afterwards.

I wish Phillip could have won, of course (he placed 5th) but another rider to admire caught my attention this weekend- Becky Holder. She placed second with impressive performances throughout all 3 days of competition (dressage, cross country, and stadium). But, what really drew my eye was her size. She was close to my size- a bit less and of course it's kinda hard to tell when somebody is on horseback- but she wasn't the typical tiny women that you always see in competition. She was a real woman. And she was reserve champion!! I have no desire to compete at this high level of eventing- but it was so uplifting to see her doing it so well!

I finally feel like I fit in with the equine world, and it feels GREAT!
